MX-5 Owners Club, Eastern Region member grabs the opportunity to get behind the wheel of Merlot Black at Snetterton and tells his story...

It was my first time in Merlot and I have been wanting to do this for a while now. Robbie and Jon were brillant thoughout the day. After doing the sighting lap and taking Robbie round as a passenger, I was let loose.

The day started pretty damp and track conditions were slippy after a down pour on the way to the track, even Robbie got it sideways comming out of the hairpin turn. But soon a dry line appeared and with the aid of the semi slick tyres I soon started to get a good bit braver.

I really enjoyed the whole day Merlot not once needing attention or repairs, every time I came off the track at the end of my session I had a whopping big smile on my face, but that is what its all about.

Thanks to all Robbie, John and a big thank you goes to Brian Chandler who took me for a spin round as a passenger in his race MX5, great car control and he showed me just what an MX5 can really do.

Friends Reunited

With its new QR code door graphic supplied by Solar Graphics, Team Merlot once again returned to local venue Snetterton for a track day on the fantastic 300 circuit. Although not a first for the Merlot brand, a first for the new car Merlot Black. The car behaved faultlessly throughout the day and along side regular drivers Jon and Robbie, can now add another name to it's list of guest drivers. Eastern Region member Paul Sutton, a track day virgin up until the MX-5 Owners Club's National Rally in September took to the wheel for his second track day experience in Merlot Black. New Owners Club member Peter McNicol, came along for the day too, got himself a passenger wrist band and enjoyed many passenger laps in the car, convincing him to get his name on the list for a place in the hot seat in the future.

Barr-Tech on Board

Barr-Tech in Cambridge have in the past carried out various bodywork tasks on Robbie's own Roadster and kindly offered to repair the rusted sill on Merlot Black. As you can see form the before and after photos Barr-Tech have done a fantastic job. Cutting out the rust, plating the sills then using lead filler for durability rather than conventional body filler. Both sills were then primed, painted and cavity waxed.

Scrapped

Project Merlot had spent long enough at EMG Motor Group's premises and the Health and Safety people were asking questions! Robbie had pretty much stripped everything he wanted off the old shell so a phone call to a local scrap dealer meant the now legendary MX-5 is now well and truly a... legend!

Project Merlot's remains are fork-lifted to it's final resting place before being sent for scrap.

It's a testament to the car, that it left on the same flat bed truck, to see that same fate as a Ford Ka that is probably half Merlot's age. Who'd bet the Ka hasn't got anywhere near as many stories to tell or had anywhere near as much fun as Project Merlot.

Back on Track with Black

With the engine and gearbox swap complete it was literally only a few hours later that Merlot Black took to the race track for the very first time. Friday morning saw Robbie, Martin and Jon at Silverstone Stowe circuit for the MX-5 Owners Club National Rally track day with Mazda on Track. With so much work having been recently completed Robbie was visibly nervous, not something we see often, and a few spots of oil on the ground and a leaky brake calliper did not make things better!

So it was with some trepidation that Robbie took to the wheel on track for the very first time on the sighting lap, followed by Martin, and then the final test, the first proper laps with Jon at the wheel and Robbie sitting, still nervous, in the passenger seat. Why were we worried? Within a few laps it was clear that Project Merlot was back. With about 45 full throttle laps being completed in the morning session, in wet and dry conditions, by lunch time there was no doubt about the car any more, and to quote Robbie’s last blog entry, “its just the same as Project Merlot, but Black”.!

The afternoon was sessioned and it gave us the opportunity to put a brand new novice track driver in the seat. Eastern Region member Carole, with Robbie instructing, had the time of her life behind the wheel, and I think Black has a new track day convert at first attempt.

After the high speed action on Saturday it was show time on Sunday. Black was entered in to the hot five competition at Billing Aquadrome. No trophy this time, but then Project Merlot never was about show, but all about go.

Carole had this to say on her very first track day experience:

A big thank you to Team Merlot for letting me loose on their car at Silverstone on Saturday! It was the first time I'd done a track day, and I felt honoured to be allowed to drive the reincarnation of Merlot so soon after its extensive 'surgery'. Robbie's tuition was spot on - I had an absolutely fantastic time, adjectives fail to do justice to the experience. I still haven't come down and am boring all my family and friends with accounts of the day! The car is a dream to drive, so quick and responsive (sorry about the rev limiter...) and I was relieved to see it recovered ok to be at the National the next day. I'd love to drive again (if you'll let me) and would recommend it to anyone to have a go!

Just the same as Project Merlot... but Black

It was cutting it fine but Merlot Black's engine transplant is complete and the car is ready for a proper track outing at Silverstone's Stowe circuit on Saturday.

Once the engine installation was complete, the car initially failed to start. After a wasted hour of checking the newly installed wiring harness (taken from Project Merlot and which is slightly different to the one that was removed from Merlot Black) the cause was in fact wrongly fitted fuel pipes! "It was a school boy error but once I'd eliminated the wiring harness as the cause, diagnosis was quick" Robbie claims, "With the pipes fitted the correct way round, the engine started on the button!"

With all the parts swapped from Project Merlot, Merlot Black really is a carbon copy of the original car and unsupprisingly feels just the same to drive.

Eastern Region member and previous Project Merlot driver Kevin Shields gave a helping hand all day to get Merlot Black back together for Silverstone. Thanks Kevin.

By 9:30pm the new (old) engine was in but Robbie knew there was no beer in the fridge so he had to throw down his overalls and call it a night before the local Spar shop shut. In should be fully up and running by the end of tomorrow.

Powertrain Transplant

After returning from the Norfolk Gala day and discovering an oil consumption figure of 0.8litre/150miles and with less than a week until Merlot Black's track debut on the Stowe circuit at Silverstone, it was decided to transplant the engine and gearbox with the powertrain recently removed from Project Merlot.

Merlot "Black" attended its very first event today when it took up a place on the MX-5 Owners Club stand at the Norfolk Gala Day. Its certainly looking good now, but we still have an issue with a bit of a smoky exhaust!

In a moment that would have been even better had someone actually had their camera switched on Eastern Region member John Mellor decided to check out the quality of the smoke whilst Robbie revved the engine.! John waved his hand in front of the tail pipe just as Robbie revved the engine. Rusult: one very black hand, Conclusion: its burning a bit of oil! Well it is Merlot "Black"

The other curious revelation is the front number plate which bears the rather odd message in the small print at the bottom, "I love my chicken" Weird or what ?

Swap Day

After 8 hours solid work Merlot Black is looking like a track car. Robbie worked all day to fit the lowered suspension, poly bushes, HEL brake hoses and EBC discs removed from Project Merlot. Robbie also replaced the left hand rear wheel bearing and fitted the steering rack from Project Merlot following advisories on it's recent MOT test. Finishing the day off with a steering geomotry set up on EMG Motor Group's Visualiner 4 wheel alignment equipment, he also found time to install the front lip spoiler. Leaving just the smokey engine to attend to. Merlot Black looks all on track to attend the Owners Club's National Rally and Silverstone circuit and Billing Aquadrome on 17th and 18th September.

Merlot "merlot" The final day!

After a busy weekend of stripping, fitting and sticking Merlot Black is beginning to look a lot more like a track car. If it could be unscrewed, or unbolted from Merlot “merlot” then it was, leaving just enough in place to keep it safe for its final drive to EMG Cambridge on the Sunday. After the major battle that had taken place at an Eastern Region tech day (back in October 06 ) fitting the roll cage, getting it out was a fairly simply task thankfully. Harness bar, seats, and various other “track” parts were detached and piled up next to the Merlot “black” for re-fitting. Of course “black” also had to be stripped with trims, carpets, unwanted electrics and more all being carefully removed as they will all be up for sale shortly.

By early afternoon on the Sunday Merlot “black” was fully stripped, with harnesses, race seat, light weight door panels all installed. In tribute to the old car the original merlot headlamp covers and wing mirrors were fitted to “black”. The jury is still out as to whether these will all stay, but some of us thought it looked cool.

And so it came time for the final farewell to Project Merlot “merlot”. The car left Robbie’s drive way for the very last time, almost 5 years exactly since it had originally arrived as a wrecker. The “merlot” is going to spend its last few days at EMG in Cambridge where it will be stripped down even further, and ultimately just the rusty shell will be scrapped. It may only be a car but a lot of people have had a whole lot of fun sitting in the drivers and the passenger seat, it really has become more than just another car.

This is of course only the end of a chapter. Merlot “black” has the potential to carry on where Merlot “merlot” left off. There is still a lot of work to be done however. “Black” has a number of major issues to sort out, not least of all the smoky engine! It looks like despite all Robbie’s work on the old “black” motor we may still have to swap it for the “merlot” engine. And with “black” currently looking like an MX-5 4x4, especially now it’s a bit lighter than it was, a suspension swap (and drop) needs to be done, and then we will have the battle to get the roll cage in again!

The Rebuild

With the cylinder head back from the engine shop the valves were removed for cleaning and lapping in. It's important that the correct valve returns to its original port.
It's a long tedious process to bring 16 valve seats from this...

Repairs Begin

The first job was to confirm the overheating and water loss problem. The engine had clearly been very hot looking at the melted state of the high tension leads...

...and the stuck open thermostat, a classic sign of an overheated engine. A split in one of the heater hoses (now where have I seen that before) and a failed cooling fan were also found. A new radiator and water pump had already been fitted so the actual cause of the initial overheating concern is still a mystery. Blocked radiator? Failed cooling fan? Split water hose?

A "block test" was carried out to check for combustion gases in the cooling system. This is a sure-fire way of confirming a failed cylinder head gasket. Gases in the cooling system are drawn though a blue coloured liquid which changes colour if combustion gases are detected.

The cylinder head was removed and sent away for crack testing and skimming.

Project Merlot "Black". Day 1

With a flat tyre and failed cylinder head gasket Project Merlot "Black" is loaded on to a trailer for its trip to Ely. Author of "You and Your Mazda MX-5/Miata" Liz Turner was sad to see the 1994 Roadster (NA8C-305014) go but excited to follow the progress of the car in the wheel tracks of Project Merlot "Merlot".

After 5 long years of nothing more than outright abuse on race tracks, airfields and Club runs up and down the UK (and a trip to Le Mans) Project Merlot has finally been pensioned off! Yes, that's it, all over for the Special Edition Merlot.! All you guys out there who have driven it, (and that's a lot of people now) have driven it for the last time...

Never has there been a better advert for the durability and reliability of an MX-5 than the good old Merlot, but sadly the tin worm has won, so we've given up..!

But don't despair, because we have just rescued another broken car and Project Merlot "Black" will be hitting the streets soon, destination Silverstone on Saturday 17 September for the OC National Rally. There's a lot of work to do, but fortunately Team Merlot are able to turn it over to their tame mechanic, some say if it wasn't

for Project Merlot he might still be married and that in 5 years he's only changed the oil once! All we know is, he's called Roadster Robbie....

The Snetterton 200

Back in February Project Merlot headed over to the brand new Snetterton 300 circuit and found it to be much to the liking of all those driving that day. On Saturday 23 July the opportunity to have a go on the shorter 200 version of the circuit presented itself and Project Merlot was there again. Ma5da Racing had very kindly arranged for a lunch time parade lap for MX-5 Owners Club members and whilst only 2 laps it was still a great drive and much enjoyed by all those who took part.

4 Wheel Alignment

Project Merlot was today treated to a session on EMG Motor Groups newly installed 4 Wheel Alignment equipment. A John Bean "Visualiner" which has the latest technology in imaging alignment systems. It's able to measure Castor, Camber and Toe-in and give live readings for all 3 angles.

Due to Project Merlot's lowered suspension setup I was unable to obtain Mazda's settings, so even with the alignment completed some angles still show as red. I've set a bit more negative camber than spec which suits a track based car like Project Merlot.

The new equipment is a joy to use and gives accurate, consistent results.

What an Ace Day!

Saturday 29 May saw the return of the MX-5 Owners Club to the famous Ace Cafe, London. This looks set now to become an annual event for the Club and Project Merlot and friends would not want to miss this. Its a great excuse to have a proper fry up and lots of proper mugs of tea!

No Owners Club rally would be complete with out an appearance from Project Merlot but rather than being dismantled by Robbie Marsh as part of a technical demo this time the Merlot took on plenty of much shinier metal in the modified car competition class. No prizes this time but we like to think that unlike much of the competition the Merlot track pedigree proves its all go and not just all show.

Merlot spotted at Silverstone!

Sunday 27 March and Project Merlot is spotted at Silverstone on the Grand Prix circuit along with over 100 other MX-5s belonging to MX-5 Owners Club members and Ma5da Racing teams.

The parade lap, organised by the MX-5 Owners Club and Ma5da Racing was the biggest yet and gave all those on track a taste of what its like to be an F1 driver (well, sort of).

Bedford Autodrome.

There is a first time for everything and on Monday 21 March Team Merlot finally made it to Bedford Autodrome. Robbie and Jon took to the track on the event organise by Mazda on Track.

By the end of the day fifth gear had disappear

ed (to return later, thankfully) along with plenty of rubber from what must be the longest lasting set of Toyo R888s anywhere, but so had the not so long lasting Red Stuff brake pads recently fitted to the Merlot.

Sunday 27 March sees the first rounds of the 2011 Ma5da Racing championship at the new Silverstone circuit. Project Merlot will be there along with up to 100 other MX-5 Owners Club cars and the 100 plus Ma5da Racing race cars for what should turn out to be a fantastic day.

Snetterton Sunday 20th February 2011

"The reality of getting up at 5 o’clock on a Sunday morning came as a bit of an effort.

The day had come when as last, I was going to drive around the Snetterton race circuit which included the newly completed section of track making up the new Snetteton 300. I was to drive a Mazda MX-5 known as Project Merlot.

It was very wet and cold as we completed our sighting laps behind the pace car, taking note of the position of the sharp bends before we were let loose on our own.

As it was my first track day I took Robbie Marsh as a passenger for some reassurance on where to brake and which lines to take into and out of the corners. On just my second lap I ran out of track at the esses (Known as Hancock corner to some of us) and ended up on the grass. Oops!! The more laps I completed the more my confidence grew and I began to enjoy the experience more and more. As it wasn’t a race or time trial I was able to find my own speed and drive at a pace I felt comfortable with. I had previously been a passenger at a track day, which is an experience in itself but doesn’t come anywhere near the thrill of driving yourself. As the day progressed I took others out for a spin, literally for one (un)lucky member. As the track dried out during the day I had increased my speed – not a good idea! Suddenly I was facing the oncoming cars. Luckily there were not many so I was able to do a quick three point turn and continue in the correct direction around the track. After that session I decided that was enough for the day, it was drawing to a close and I wanted to make sure I ended it on a high note.

If you get the chance to drive on a track day in an MX-5, do so – it’s very exhilarating and a great experience. Many thanks to all of the Project Merlot team."

Brake Upgrade

After fitting the new EBC Turbo Groove front discs and EBC Redstuff pads in time for the track day at Snetterton circuit in November, the Merlot is back in the workshop at EMG in Cambridge for the fitment of a set of HEL stainless steel brake hoses in readyness for the cars next visit to Snetterton on February 20th.

The discs and pads, supplied by mx5parts.co.uk performed exceptionally well on track as well as looking the part.

New Merlot driver, Andrew, gives us his report on a fun day.

"Yet another great day out for the Merlot at Snetterton on 7 November with Robbie (driving and shepherding us newcomers), Martin and Jon all attending. After sign on, safety briefing, sighting laps and noise testing, both Graham and I were let loose for the morning session, mainly run on a damp but drying track. As I got used to the car, conditions, track ,wearing a helmet and being strapped in tightly, the Merlot fun factor soon kicked in and my laps flew by.

After lunch the track really started to dry out and several driver/passenger pairs strapped in to the pocket rocket to mix it up with a whole host of machinery ranging from Caterhams to an Aston Martin DB9, as well as Mk1 ,2 and 3 MX-5’s. Although outgunned on the straights, the Merlot more than held its own in MX-5 country ,the corners. After 3 we all swapped over quickly to get as many laps in as possible.The chequered flag came out all too soon at 4.00pm, one more lap and the Merlot magic finished for another day.

Despite being out on track for around 5 hours, Merlot didn’t miss a beat all day. Then, unlike the cars on trailers, Robbie loaded all his tools up and drove Merlot home. Thanks to Robbie for making her bulletproof, safe and so much fun for us track newbies throughout the day. Also fo rall the time he, Martin and Jon put in to keep the car going. I had a great value fun day out and highly recommend it to any Eastern Region member wondering what track days are all about. I’d do it all again tomorrow."

Rockingham with Mazda on Track

Project Merlot's third visit to Rockingham Motor Speedway was on 29th October. The event was organised by Mazda on Track in association with Rockingham Cars. With the car sporting decals for its new sponsor MX5Parts, Robbie and Jon took to the International Long circuit.

The new-to-the team circuit configuration brought fresh challenges to enjoy; having two extra tight hairpin bends and a fantastic chicane after the turn in off the banked section meant there was a great mix of fast and slow corners.

After seeing "sparks" emitting from the right hand front wheel under heavy braking, the pad wear was closely monitored during the morning session. Just after lunch the cheap after-market front pads had nearly worn down to the back plates (apparently wearing out about 6mm of pad material) so a used set of pads was fitted to finish the day. The EBC Redstuff pads and Turbogroove discs kindly supplied by MX5Parts will be fitted next.

Jon said: "It was one of the best track days we had ever been on, with good etiquette on track, no incidents, we were driving well and the Merlot was behaving itself while holding its own against much faster cars."

But the clear highlight of the day for both drivers was spending time with Rob Boston, who took to the driver's seat of Project Merlot to give Robbie and Jon a taste of what the car can do when in the capable hands of Ma5da Racing's 2010 MX-5 Champion.

Robbie said: "Without needing time to become accustomed to the car, Rob was turning in off the banked section of the circuit in 4th gear at speeds in excess of 90mph, a turn that at 60mph I thought was very good going."

Jon said: "Rob was constantly making corrections on the steering wheel but the car was absolutely as smooth as can be. I said to Rob afterwards that I couldn't believe how much he constantly corrected the steering to get the right lines, while the car was always in control. He said that was the key to achieving speed- being smooth yet committed.

"In Rob's hands, we were convinced we had the quickest car on the circuit which was borne out by the fact that the local dealership had brought along two race cars (a Fiat 500 and a Mazda MX-5 Mk3 which had recently been entered in the Britcar 24-hour race) and both were being driven by former British Touring Car drivers to give people fast passenger rides. Yet when I wet out with Rob we were going so quickly that when we came up behind the race MX-5 Rob had to back off to give them space to accelerate away. Then we caught them up again and overtook them in our basically standard road car! It's obvious to me now that you don't need to spend thousands adapting your car to be quick. You're better off spending your money on driver tuition to become a better driver."

Rob said: "The car was fantastic, just lacking a limited slip diff - and the rear view mirror kept dropping down." After hearing what Project Merlot was all about, he said it was a 'brilliant idea'.
The Project Merlot team agree with the limited slip diff observation, but say but the mirror issue was just due to Rob using every kerb on the circuit!

The October edition of the MX-5 Owners Club magazine, Soft Top Hardtop will once again feature Project Merlot in a look back over the last four years. The original project team of Jon, Robbie and Martin give their thoughts on the past and on the future.

2006 national rally in Lincolnshire, it looked fantastic and drew a great crowd. I loved driving it at Cadwell, which is my favourite circuit to
date. It was quite bizarre when a stranger in a petrol station after the event, recognised us.
He said ‘that’s the car that’s in the magazine it really does exist.’ Thinking about it, everything which we’ve done with it has been a highlight!”

Project Merlot on TV!

Ma5da Racing from Rockingham on 30 August, as reported earlier, featured a parade lap of the circuit of 60 MX-5 Owners Club cars, including Project Merlot, and now the coverage has made it to the small screen on the Motors TV channel. It was rather damp Sunday at Chatsworth house in Derbyshire for the MX-5 Owners Club 16th National Rally. But spirits were not dampened and its estimated that over 1000 MX-5s were in attendance.

Project Merlot was once again the subject of Owners Club Technical Consultant Robbie Marsh's presentation when he demonstrated diagnostic fault code procedures to many interested Club members.
This was Project Merlot's 5th MX-5 Owners Club National Rally, having first been unveiled to the world at the 2006 National Rally in Lincolnshire.

JAE a festival of all things Japanese and car related.

Project Merlot is a 1995 Mk1 owned by three MX-5 Owners Club members Jon Elsey, Martin Curtis and Robbie Marsh. The limited edition was saved from the scrapheap back in 2006.

The dead engine and blocked radiator were replaced in Robbie’s garage and the surplus parts were stripped and sold off at an Owners Club national rally and via the internet. Before long the car was 10% lighter and still road legal.

When it was raring to go, an open invitation was offered to all Eastern Region members to sign up as drivers for track days. Thanks to generous donations from sponsors Project Merlot has been able to introduce many beginners to the excitement of MX-5 motorsport. Project Merlot enables people to take a Mk1 MX-5 for a spin without risking their own pride and joy whether as a driver or passenger.

Thanks to extensive media coverage Project Merlot is possibly the most famous MX-5 in the UK and you can catch up with the racy roadster's latest news here on this very blog.

With sun shine all day and plenty of other MX-5s on the track The Merlot took to to Suffolk Airfield track for the first time this year. We got a new track layout with some extra twisty bits that challenged the Merlot's drivers to get around them!

Jon E, Robbie M and Martin C took to the wheel with new boy Daniel C who in his first outing in the Merlot managed to spin it out on his second lap on one of the aforementioned corners.. ! woops!

Thanks to Javelin Track Days once again for making the old Woodbridge Airfield site in to the brilliant venue it has now become. And to Chris from Catrain.co.uk for continued support, for the video below and for lending us a crash hat....

Temporary Repair

It was back in September 2006 when the engine was being changed that the rusty power steering fluid return pipe was noticed. There was no way that a small problem like that was going to stop Team Merlot getting the car up and running, on schedule that weekend. With no replacement pipe to hand, emergency measures were called for so using the spare parts available at the time, the rusty part of the pipe was cut out and a short length of rubber hose fitted in its place. This was meant to be a temporary repair...

42 months later and the rubber pipe was still in situ and holding out well, long forgoten about. March 21st and the hose finally decides to let go, spewing PAS fluid all over the exhaust and engine.

Back in the garage the hose was removed, expecting to be in shreads but only a small cut in the pipe was found, although the hose was well swollen and clearly on borrowed time! It looks like is was a coolant pipe in a former life so did well to last as long as it did.

A new pipe has been fitted in place of the failed one, a propper metal pipe? No. That would cost money, money a lo-cost project like this doesn't have! A piece of power steering hose from a Ford Focus has been used that was destained for the skip... A temporary repair you understand!

Snetterton with Javelin 21 March 10

Back on track at last and Team Merlot and the Eastern Region realise what they have been missing since the Merlot’s last track event at Mallory Park last year.

Jon, Robbie and Martin, the guys who keep it all going, were joined by MX-5 Owners Club Eastern Region members Chris Gage and Chris Woodger on a Javelin trackday at the Norfolk cicuit. Chris Gage also represented car sponsor Cambridge Area Training who are continuing their support for Project Merlot into 2010. Chris Woodger, long time MX-5 fan and Club member is also now know as Car 82 in the Ma5da Racing series. This was Chris W’s first time in the Merlot and it gave him an opportunity to compare the cars ability with his own race car (it came out quite well I think) and give Chris some much needed experience of the Snetterton circuit, new to Chris, but where he will be racing on 24, 25 April.

The day’s sunny start didn’t last long and intermittent light showers throughout the day gave the drivers the chance to try out their wet weather driving techniques as well, although overall the track stayed pretty dry.

It looked very much like “game over” early in the afternoon session when smoke was seen to come from the car which then limped home to the pits. After a few minutes of fear and trepidation Robbie got to the bottom of the problem. A split power steering pipe, and loss of all the fluid were the cause of the smoke. With his usual no nonsense flair 5 minutes later Robbie had it sorted and the car was back on the road, minus its power steering system, but otherwise none the worse.

Several Eastern Region members took advantage of the chance for a high speed passenger ride around the Snetterton Circuit. Ian Johnson had come along with 3 generations of the family and the Merlot had its oldest passenger so far when Chris W took Ian’s 83 year old father, for what was described afterwards, as a “very, very” fast ride!

Its now three and a half years since Project Merlot made its first appearance at the MX-5 Owners Club National Rally in Lincolnshire shortly followed by its first track day at Donnington Park. In that time it’s given many Owners Club members a unique opportunity to get behind the wheel, not worry about those speed limits and learn what an MX-5 is really capable of. Its seen many more members, don a crash hat, get strapped into the passenger seat, and be given the chance to see and feel first hand what its like to be on track, on the limit!

CAT go forward with Project Merlot into 2010

2010 is the third year that CA Training Ltd. have helped sponsor Project Merlot, the MX-5 track day car operated by MX-5 Eastern region members Jon, Martin and Robbie. As ever the mission statement at Project Merlot is unchanged, to provide hands on experience backed up by experienced drivers.

During 2009 I was lucky enough to experience one of Project Merlot's track days at Woodbridge. With the aid of drives with all three of the team I soon appreciated how valuable their experience was.

Yesterday I attended the first Project Merlot event of 2010 at Snetterton. As ever the car was well turned out and when a minor mechanical hiccup threatened the afternoon, the teams experience was on hand to ensure the Project Merlot car was back on track in minutes.

CATraining wishes everyone involved in the project an extremely busy 2010 and we hope to be able to report back on another action packed season at the end of the year.

Starts on the Button

After standing, untouched since the MX-5 Owners Club's National Rally in September and through a very cold winter Project Merlot started on the button with not even a Jump start boosting its small AGM type battery! The alternator appeared to be seized, a fact pointed out by a loud squeal and smoke being emitted from a slipping drive belt. But giving the pulley a spin with a spanner seemed to free it off. I am thinking it may have been the massive charge load on the alternator casuing the belt to slip rather that a mechanical seizure... although the alternator was stationary with the belt spinning around it! I took the car into the Workshops at EMG Motor Group in Cambridge for a quick once over ready for the new season ahead.

Other than usual service items, I have decided to change 2 of the metal brake pipes which have rusted. The one that runs from the front to the back of the car is rusted where it passes though the plastic retaining clips. The clips tend to scratch the protective coating off the pipe exposing the metal which promotes the corrosion. The 2nd pipe is the one that runs from the right to the left side of the car accross the rear subframe. I think that this pipe is subjected to rusting due to its relatively exposed, lateral location accross the car.

2009 was a special year for the MX-5 and the MX-5 Owners Club. They both had birthday, 20 and 15 years old respectively. The Owners Club big celebration of 2009 was a National Rally at Mallory Park circuit on Saturday 12 September.

A big highlight of the day was the track action organised by Mazda on Track and Project Merlot took part in the morning open pit lane session and the afternoon 20 sessions, but it nearly didn’t. Merlot regulars Robbie and Martin took the morning session and it was Robbie who brought the car in off the track at around midday as it wasn’t handling well and it was no surprise to Robbie to find that one of the front tyres was flat! Not since its first track session way back in October 2006 at Donnington Park had the Merlot ever suffered a problem on a track day. With an hour or more of the session to run, and more booked for the afternoon, the hunt was then on to find a way to carry on. The solution was simple! We were at an event with in excess of 1000 MX-5 parked up and that makes 4000 wheels available to borrow. So it was that Owners Club Eastern Region member Gary Smith, who was due to take the car out on track in the afternoon lent us a wheel and off we went again. Gary wanted his wheel back to drive home understandably so Dave Larkman was kind enough to lend us the spare from his drift MX-5, which was a bit better than having to creep home on a space saver tyre.

So all’s well that ends well. Mallory is a brilliant little circuit, the sun shone, the rally was a success and the Merlot lived to fight another day.

Helmingham Festival 2009.

There is no better way to spend a Sunday than at the Helmingham Festival of Classic and Sports Cars, held in the ground of the wonderful moated, stately home, Helmingham Hall. This is Suffolk’s very own mini Goodwood Festival of Speed and Project Merlot made its annual appearance on the MX-5 Owners Club Eastern Region stand.

Wow and wow, and WOW!. This was the first time I had been to the Silverstone Classic and I was pretty knocked out by the event. From the Ferrari Owners Club stand, to the classic racing, to the many other club, trade stands and stalls, this is certainly a classic event. Project Merlot spent the day on the MX-5 Owners Club stand adorned in the Clubs 15 20 balloons, the third biggest Club stand after the Porsche and Jag OC stands we were told! The Merlot didn’t get the chance to go on track this time but having sat and watched some of the most exciting racing I have seen for a long while, it wetted the appetite and Silverstone is now a “must do” for Team Merlot.

The weather was hot and so was the action on track. Project Merlot with drivers: Jon E, Martin C, Chris G and Gary S, made its first 2009 appearance at Woodbridge Airfield on Saturday the 27 June. The MX-5 count for the event was high with 7 on the track and we even had a Merlot fan who had flown in all the way from Las Vegas for a passenger ride!

The MX-5 Owners Club 2009 Spring Rally was held at Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire over the weekend of 16-17 May and featured a full track day, run by Javelin Track Days, on the Saurday, and a Club sprint competition on the Sunday.

The Merlot was there both days along with plenty of other Club members putting their 5 through its paces.

Track conditions varied from dry to flooded on both days but this certainly didn't put anyone off.

Following the Rally weekend the Merlot along with plenty of Eastern Region friends was to be found blasting across the Yorskshire Moors, scaring plenty of sheep, on roads that those us from East Anglia can usually only dream of!

Merlot goes "Mad Max" in Shakespeare County !

Saturday 28 February saw Team Merlot head off for a driving experience day with Mazda on Track at the Shakespeare County Raceway, otherwise known as Long Martson Airfield (a location in many respects doing a very passable impression of a set from a Mad Max Movie.!)

Two different sprint courses had been set up the runway tarmac with cars, mostly MX-5s, going off for a lap, one at a time. A different format to the usual track day we know and love but certainly one of the most entertaining driving days I have ever experienced.

And I thought Robbie had given up smoking.?

Originally conceived in 2006 as a means to get more people behind the wheel of their favourite sports car and drive it to the max. without having to worry about damaging their own pride and joy, and in the process help improve their driving skills, CATraining and Team Merlot share a common goal to help train people and develop skills. In 2009 CATraining will be advising the Project Merlot team on the development of a training programme for new drivers so they can benefit from the wealth of experience that the Team have now built up. This is very much at the core of CATraining own philosophy - using people with experience to share and develop skills - something we are all going to need in the near future. Martin Curtis reports that in 2008 many more MX-5 Owners Club members took to the wheel at numerous track evetns and they hope to do even more in 2009

Brands Hatch and its still wet!

I guess it’s the time of year, it could even have snowed but in the end it was just a damp track that awaited Project Merlot on its first track day at Brands Hatch.
On a day organised by MazdaOnTrack and featuring, yes you guessed it, lots of other Mazdas, Martin, Jon and new Merlot driver Ady Neill took the Merlot out on its last event of 2008.
The wet track at Rockingham in October had been extra slippery but the wet track at Brands was only regular slippery and by the afternoon sessions a dry driving line was to be found.
Ady Neill was fulfilling a long held dream to drive on the Brands Hatch track and Team Merlot were glad to help out, especially as Ady had spent many hours applying the cars graphics over the last couple of years and only ever managed a couple of sprint laps at Haynes before today!

Rockingham Motor Speedway in the wet !

Project Merlot spent Sunday 26 October at Rockingham with a number of other MX-5s on a track day promoted by Mazda on Track. Rockingham Motor Speedway is the UKs only banked oval raceway and our circuit included part of the oval as well as a more traditional twisty infield section.

The most challenging part of the day was the weather. Up until minutes before track time began it rained making the track very slippery indeed and causing plenty of spins and pushing the skills of many of the drivers to the limit just keeping on the black stuff!

By the time of the afternoon session it had dried considerably and a quick change of tyres for the Merlot saw it go out on its semi slick Toyos. This was like driving a different car as speeds and confidence grew and we managed to get the most out of the faster banked sections of the track.
This was a welcome return to a proper circuit for the Merlot and great to be on track with other MX-5s for the first time for some while.

A welcome return to Woodbridge

It had been a while but Team Merlot were back at Woodbridge Airfield for a Javelin Track day on Saturday 13 September.

Jonnie Boy reported the following in the MX-5 Owners Club Eastern Region Forum on todays drive;

Well...
That was the most fun I've had in Project Merlot for a long time. The car behaved impeccably again and nursed a couple of trackday virgins through their day - despite efforts to upset her.
The higher tyre pressures - intended to prolong tread life - made the rear a little tail happy, but in a fun and controllable style. I got some wicked powerslides onto the runway.
Rob, the Bridgestones seem to have cured the horrific understeer we used to get at certain corners, but i feel a LSD would still be a good investment.
I don't know what happened to Teresa, she seemed happy enough after a few laps with me but never wanted to go out on track again after her time with Jason. Sorry about your nails btw.
And James impoved beyond all recognition after his session with the racing instructor. I know that Merlot thanks you for investing that £20 too!
It's nice to know that Martin isn't the only one-handed knob-fondler in the East!
All-in-all it was a fantastic day with a great bunch of people, huge thanks also to Steve, Ian and Katie for bringing their track specials along and keep the ER Motorsport flag flying high.
Saturday totally re-ignited my passion for trackdays - I can't wait for the next one, although I do ache all over!
What i would give for a smooth track!!

Sunday 18 May saw Project Merlot at the MX-5 Owners Club Spring Rally at the Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset. Hyanes best kept secret is the sprint track and this was made available to the Owners Club for the day. The Merlot was to be seen throughout the day on the track making it a most memorable rally for two more Club members who had their first drive in the car. New boys James Huggins and Ady Neill took to the wheel along with the regular Merlot crew of Martin, Robbie and Jon.

It was panic stations however with minutes to go before the first session as a helpful soul in the crowd spotted that a couple of the Merlot's tyres were on the wrong way around. In an effort worthy of the best F1 pit crew the wheels were soon swapped and the car took to the track with moments to spare.

Woodbridge Airfield Saturday 26 April

Back again, for more action with Javelin Track Days at our home circuit, Woodbridge Airfield.
After the last time we visited Woodbridge, with Gales force winds and the resultant shorter track, this time we were back on a longer circuit, albeit with some changes from the 2007 layout.

Drivers today were Merlot co-owner Martin Curtis and retuning driver and sponsor, Chris Gage from Cambridge Area Training, together with two more Merlot virgins, Andrew Evans and Tracey Sparling. Just for a change the weather was kind to us, no showers, no wind and sunshine most of the day.

After all the hard work Robbie Marsh had put in during the Merlot’s April refresher this was actually the first time the Team had ever taken the car out on track without Robbie in support, as he was on holiday, and it was not without some trepidation that the first few sessions were undertaken. Jon Elsey came along but took on the role of official track photographer for the day leaving the car in the hands of Martin all day, who is not certainly not know for his mechanical skills! We need not have worried though as the car did not miss a beat all day long.

Tracey spun the car on her first trip out but undaunted carried on. Chris also had a spin, but had a really good excuse for us all when he retuned to the pits!
Martin tried in vain to get the car to spin, as he has done on a number of occasions, but it just doesn’t seem to do it for him, and it just ends up with something more resembling drifting. (but don’t tell Robbie!)

Refreshed for Spring

Project Merlot spent the first 2 weeks in April perched on a 2 post vehicle lift in the warm confines of the Cambridge Branch of EMG Motor Groups' modern, spacious workshop. The car has been undergoing some transplant & cosmetic surgery in preparation for the next visit to Woodbridge airfield with Javelin Trackdays.

A new clutch assembly kindly supplied by EMG Motor Group was installed along with a new gear change lever dust boot and the box filled with fresh 75W90 gear oil in an attempt to aid the failing 3rd gear syncromesh evident at the recent Woodbridge event. I also changed the clutch fluid.

A powerflow made cat-back exhaust system donated by Ady Neill (solargraphics.net) with a 3" tip now replaces the decrepid and failing Bosal system the car had been dragging around since the team had bought it.

Next, I removed the Axxis Ultimate brake pads from the front and fitted a set of EBC Green Stuff pads (donated by Eastern Region member Ailsa Thompson). Here it must be stated how well the Axxis Ultimates had lasted. After just one track day we were finding that Mazda pads were melting from the heat and needed at least a clean up and re-face before the next event. The Axxis Ultimates however have lasted for 5 events untouched and when removed, purely because they were looking a bit worn and we didn't want them to wear out mid event, they showed no signs of over heating at all. This is a brake pad I would happily reccomend and I hope the EBC's fitted now are as commendable. While the wheels were off I also changed the brake fluid.

The boot lid with its characteristic maybe even sentimental dents & holes has now been consigned to the skip in exchange for the new lid which was supplied by Dandycars and painted by DWR.

Woodbridge Airfield Saturday 1 March

Our first trip back of 2008 to Woodbridge Airfield with Javelin Track Days and what a day!
Gale force winds over night had removed all traces of cones by the morning and therefore no track to be seen! Thankfully some very early morning action by the Javelin crew put most of it back together before we arrived but with the strong wind persisting they decided that the main runway section would just be too windy to drive safely so we ended up with a shorter, but no less interesting track.
Drivers today were Martin Curtis and Jon Elsey, with two new boys to the Merlot, John Mellor and Jamie Tink.
We started off the day on Toyo track tyres but by lunch time the more severe corners of the shorter track were taking there toll on these so a sprint back to Martin’s for a replacement set of wheels and tyres was necessary. This made the day even more interesting. A morning session on the semi slick and an afternoon on regular road tyres showed up just how much the handling can change with a different tyre.
By the end of the day we had pretty much removed all the tread from the offside front tyre and worst still we were having a few problems selecting gears.

Project Merlot - Back to the Old Skool

After a sabbatical from Snetterton circuit Project Merlot returned on 17th February for its 3rd visit to the track, this time with Javelin Trackdays. The morning, although cold at -4°c was dry and clear and the day remained so through out the event with temperatures climbing up to 6°c by the afternoon. Project Merlot saw the return of Steve Hider (soon to be out with his very own track prepared Roadster), Tony “Dad” Brown & Robbie Marsh to the driving seat and added a new name to the already distinguished list of Merlot drivers, Steve Alleyne. It was the first time Mr Alleyne had driven any car on any circuit so not only were his nerves tense but so were the nerves of the Team! After signing on and listening to the briefing all drivers were sent out in 3 groups for sighting laps. Steve Alleyne, obviously keen to get out on track used his own car for this only to return to the pit lane after 3 laps to be told he should have been wearing his crash helmet!!! The circuit opened at around 9:30 and from then until five o’clock with only one hours rest for lunch the car was subjected to the extremes of driving that it has taken in its stride over the past 18 months. Since Team Melot last visited the circuit they have fitted FM Anti Roll bars, installed polybushes and are now running Toyo R888’s making the car even better under track conditions. Tony, who paid for 20 minutes instruction from an ARDS instructor, said “The car certainly handles better compared to the last time I drove it. I even passed a few cars”. Once Steve had got used to being able to use the whole “road” he said “Wow! Fantastic day I will definitely be doing this again, thanks to Robbie, Steve and Tony for showing me the ropes. I can’t wait to see the video”.

In total Project Merlot clocked up 297 miles on the track that day and used £103 worth of fuel. Strangely enough, the last time we visited Snetterton we did 294 miles!

Project Merlot made its last track day appearance of the year by revisiting Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. Robbie and Jon were the drivers for the day and clocked up a respectable 210 track miles, with Tracey and Katie as passengers. The Merlot handled the twists and turns of the course well, holding the corners tightly. Jon and Tracey were a little late arriving leaving Robbie and Katie to wait for half an hour in the cold; however this did not detract from a fantastic day at a fantastic circuit!!

Another Busy Weekend!

SATURDAY 15 September saw the Merlot head to Woodbridge Airfield for another Javlin Track day. Two new track day drivers, Chris Gage and Gary Smith joined Ken Ward and Katie Pyle driving on the Suffolk track.
The day got off to a very bad start when the exhaust system failed completely on the way to the venue. A quick trip to the nearest Exhaust Centre and half an hour later it was welded back together. Thanks go to Hadleigh Tyres and Exhausts of Woodbridge Road Ipswich for the invaluable assistance.
After a successful day on the track the Merlot headed west in convoy with several other Eastern Region 5s to the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon ready for the MX-5 Owners Club National Rally on the Sunday.
The Merlot featured on the Owners Club Motor Sport stand on the Sunday where it was conveniently located immediately adjacent to the AON Insurance stand and was joined by several other club motor sport cars including the Phoenix 5s racer.

Merlot Spotted at Brands Hatch

FINALLY, Project Merlot makes it on to the Famous Brands Hatch racing circuit!

But on this occasion the speeds were somewhat less then the car is used to when on a track. The car was taking part in a parade lap with nearly 30 other MX-5s from the Owners Club who were invited onto the track by MaX5 Racing who were in action that day.

On the afternoon of Saturday 25th August Project Merlot spent a couple of hours on a 2 post lift in the workshops of EMG Motor Group where Team Merlot set to work fitting a new set of front brake discs (supplied by EMG), Front & rear Axxis Ultimate pads and Front & rear Flyin' Miata adjustable anti-roll bars (supplied by Performance 5). This was all in preparation for it's track day at Cadwell Park on the following Wednesday organised by Javelin Track Days.

At extremely short notice the Merlot was squeezed into a spare time slot with Wheels Inmotion for a full geometry check and adjustment. After discussing with Tony our requirements for the little "racer" he proceeded to dial in the desired amount of caster, camber & toe-in ensuring the car would be predictable and controllable for any ability of driver who maybe behind the wheel.

Project Merlot at Classic Car Event

PROJECT Merlot along with 40 other cars from the MX-5 Owners Club Eastern Region and local Mazda Dealer Underwoods of Colchester was on show at the Helmingham Festival of Classic and Sports Cars. The annual event held in the ground of the stately home near Ipswich attracts hundreds of classic and sports cars every year.

PROJECT Merlot took pride of place on the MX-5 Owners Club stand at JAE 07. The Japanese Auto Extravaganza is the biggest gathering of Japanese car clubs every year in the UK and features every japanese enthusiasts car imaginable, from the cute Suzuki Cappuccino to the mighty Nissan Skyline.

This was the first time the car had been seen out in public proudly carrying the name of AON car insurance who are now supporting the project.

Project Merlot goes stunt driving !

STUNT supremo Russ Swift couldn't resist climbing into the driving seat of the Eastern Region's track car Project Merlot.
The world's number one display driver has become a star after wowing audiences of programmes like Fifth Gear and Top Gear and proving to be the skills behind numerous car stunt TV commercials.
He also holds three Guinness world records - including parallel parking in the tightest space (just 33cm longer than a car) and the fastest do-nuts (10 complete revolutions in under 15 seconds).
The celebrity precision driver took a moment out of his spectacular show at the 2007 Japanese Automobile Extravaganza at Peterborough to check out Project Merlot and chat to the team. Russ said: "My background is in grassroots motorsport. I used to do autotesting and I've seen with projects just like this, how you can start at the bottom and work your way up."
After hearing the car had been rescued from a scrap yard fate for just £50, and rebuilt on a shoestring budget, Russ said: "This is right after my own heart this is.
"I love to see it. These days motorsport is so much about money - it's such a big factor in most forms of the sport. I like to see people compete, or just have a go. If they win it's a bonus!"
Obviously enthused by the project he chatted about the modifications made to the car and recommended the team consider fitting a limited slip differential to help cornering while on the track. So taken was he by the little roadster that with a mischievous glint in his eye he asked what the handbrake was like. Maybe Russ was angling for a quick spin... Literally!

Woodbridge Airfield Part 3

It was back to Woodbridge for another Javelin track day on Saturday 7 July. Drivers today were co-owners Jon and Robbie together with Neil Barber on his second outing to Woodbridge. And the big surprise of the day was the first appearance of Matt Barber who had, due to a knee injury, missed the last couple of Woodbridge outings and had been substituted!
For the most part the day was dry but a couple of short showers livened up the track again.
Project Merlot had some very welcome company on the day with the second appearance of Ian and Tula Wards new Roadster track tool together with track day regular Brian Hoskins in his SE Gleneagles.

Woodbridge is very much our home ground now and we hope to be back soon.

Woodbridge Airfield 16 June

Saturday 16 June saw Project Merlot and the team make its second visit to Woodbridge Airfield for a track day with Javelin. The day saw a return behind the wheel for co-owners Jon Elsey and Martin Curtis, with new driver Kendra Dixon and second timer Katie Pyle returning after her trip to Curborough sprint.
The weather was not quite so kind as on the previous outing to Woodbridge with a couple of heavy showers but fears that the rain would spoil the fun were completely unnecessary as the extra wet track was even more exciting to drive with the lower levels of grip!
And to top off the day the car and drivers spent some time on the shorter handing circuit really putting the car through its paces and learning the difference between over steer and under steer.
The Merlot was joined on track by 5 other MX-5s on this occasion with Eastern Region regular track day fans Ken Ward and Brian Hoskins putting their own cars through their paces.
The day also saw the first track outing for Ian Ward’s track day MK1 which he had been working on in secret for the last few months.
The line up of 5s was completed by Eastern Region member Ben Edwards in his red MK1 and a “special guest” appearance on the handling circuit by David aka “Captain Muppet” in his matt back MK1 which he is currently competing with in the 2007 Eurodrift Pro-Am Championship.

Project Merlot goes Sprinting

Project Merlot had its first trip to a sprint circuit on Saturday 2 June. Regular drivers, Jon, Robbie and Martin were joined by new girl Katie Pyle at the famous Curborough venue in Staffordshire.
The MX-5 Owners Club hold a non competitive fun day at Curborough every year on which the sun always seems to shine.

Project Merlot wins a trophy!

On Sunday 20 May Project Merlot took on all comers and came away with first place in its first competitive event!!

In its new livery the car was a last minute entry in the MX-5 Owners Club Spring Rally Hot 5 competition. The car drew loads of attention from club members and the general public at the event held at Beamish Museum in County Durham. Several people were heard to say on first sight such things as “hey, that’s the car form the club magazine we have been reading about”, proving that the cars fame is spreading.

Following the voting by club members the Merlot was declared the winner and co-owner Robbie Marsh was presented with a trophy. It was a proud day for Team Merlot and all those involved.

Javelin Airfield Day - A Drivers Account

It was the forth time Project Merlot had been driven hard on a track, and since the burst heater hose escapade at Donnington Park on its first outing the car has taken all we have thrown at it without any rebuke. Would the day at Woodbridge Airfield with Javelin Trackdays prove to be the end of this perfect reputation?

Martin Curtis and I arrived at Woodbridge at 8:30am after an “it’s going to be one of those days” journey to the venue. After me locking the keys in the boot at the filling station (Martin had his spare), overflowing the tank and loosing a good few quids worth of petrol on the floor, Martin having to drive back home to get some polish then when we did arrive at the gates of the Airfield the Marshall had Mrs Curtis’s name on the driver list, a recurring theme at track days now! We carried out the usual routine of removing number plates & items from the boot, setting the tyre pressures, checking the levels and giving the car a quick shine up. At 9:30 we were called to sign on and attend the driver briefing. Now accompanied by fellow drivers for the day Ken Ward (Track day veteran) & Neil Barber (Track day virgin), we listened, shivering to the very specific instruction given out by the Javelin Track Days owner and the head Marshall (who must have the neatest facial hair in the northern hemisphere). At 10:00am the first group of 15 cars went out to do 3 sighting laps of the circuit followed about 6 minutes later by the second group of 15 cars which included Project Merlot. After the sighting lap I was a little unsure about how the rest of the day was going to pan out. Unlike proper race circuits the “track” on an airfield day is marked out using cones. This can get quite confusing as from a distance a lot of cones look, just like a lot of cones so working out which ones to drive between or round while traveling at speed takes more thinking about than “just keeping on the black stuff”. Also an airfield has less than perfect “road” surfaces. Changing between tarmac & concrete and having to ride over tracks in the ground that military style gates run on! Being marked out by cones (and hay bales on some corners) also meant that drivers didn’t have the luxury of being able to clip the kerbs.

Roll back to the Sunday before the airfield day and you would see the Merlot on axle stands with Jamie Tink and various other Eastern Region members mucking in to fit a set of Super Pro poly bushes(supplied by Performance 5) and front strut brace (supplied by Dandycars) at one of their bi annual Tech Days. With logistics arranged that would make a formula 1 team look amateurish the Merlot Motorsport team and a fast car managed to collect the car from Woolpit, put in an appearance and participate in the monthly meet drive from Ipswich to Bury St. Edmunds, get it to EMG Cambridge for a wheel alignment then end up at Woodbridge to put its new suspension components to the test.

After warming the tyres up and tweaking the rear suspension damping rate after the first 2 sessions on the track the car set up was perfect for the conditions. Javelin had marked out a varied circuit with straights, tight 90 degree left and right hand bends, chicanes, sweeping bends and a fantastic “loop” that you could power round with great satisfaction. This was without a doubt Martins favorite part of the circuit, commenting on how well the car holds on around this part of the circuit and how he was determined to evoke a bit of controlled over steer. It was on Martins final session that I would be genuinely concerned about the safety of the car. OK, the loop area was a big expanse of concrete but it was surrounded by (also concrete) walls!

I was first in the driving seat for the day and drove a steady 15 minutes getting a feel for the circuit and the car with its new suspension set up. As the tyres warmed up I was getting more and more confident but still being cautious around this uneven circuit. Ken was next out and there is photographic evidence of the left hand front wheel leaving the ground at some point during his run. Obviously, as usual our very own Mr. Ward was pushing it to the limit! Next out was Neil. Three members of Neil’s family were present at Woodbridge but they all seemed reluctant to take a passenger ride so I jumped in. (maybe I was nervous about letting the Merlot out of my sight – who says we’re getting to precious with it?). After his session Neil returned to the paddock having thoroughly enjoyed himself and I was heard to be telling his family members how smooth his driving was I thought he drove very well, if I didn’t know any better I would have said he’d been out on a track before. Martin clearly enjoyed his session judging by the amount of tyre squeal. This was an aspect of the day that Martin warmed to. He said “I feel out of place squealing the tyres too much on a proper circuit. At an airfield it seems to be more about enjoying the car than getting in super fast lap times.” Up until lunch time the car and drivers had behaved. The only concern being a noise developing from the RHF wheel which a brake strip-down over lunch seemed to cure. On my second session I was clearly getting more confident in the car and the circuit, with Katie as passenger on the first left hander of my 5th lap I went into the corner too fast, lifted off through fear of understeer taking me straight on in to a hay bale and consequently induced oversteer. I managed to recover the slide & made a quick apology to Katie who said “No need to apologies, that was great can we do it again?” It was Ken’s turn. Had Katie known what tricks he had up his sleeve she would have paid to have taken a passenger ride with him this time. While being closely followed in the Merlot by a faster and more expensive Porsche Ken, maybe in sympathy for me took the first right hand corner too fast again forcing the car in to an oversteer situation. First the rear slid to the left impressively spinning 2 traffic cones video game style across the track, then after Kens counter steering efforts the car spun across the full width of the track and through 360 degrees causing the Porsche driver to brake hard and maybe, just maybe soil his pants!

So the first track day wounds were etched into the paintwork of Project Merlot, small scraps on the left side from Ken’s encounter with the cones. Despite Martins determination to drift the car round the concrete loop on the last session of the day, a task he was unable to accomplish due to the “perfect handling of the car.” The rest of the event passed by with no more lasting memories other than those on camera and those great ones in the minds of the attendees.

Woodbridge Airfield with Javelin Trackdays

The car did us proud again today. Whether it was the new suspension bushes (courtesy of Performance5) or the front strut brace (courtesy of Dandycars) or possible the alignment carried out on Friday (courtesy of EMG Cambridge) the handling was pretty much spot on. None of the tail happy slightly unplanted feel it had at Snetterton a few weeks ago. It may have also been down to the track as well. A combination of surfaces some smooth, some bumpy, really tested the suspension on the 2 mile track, but with out the really long straights and sweeping high speed corners of somewhere like Snetterton
I found it a very different experience than driving on a proper racing circuit, but still loved it, a brilliant day out. Thanks to Javelin Trackdays who organise the event at Woodbridge, which I can highly recommend if you fancy some track action.

What we did today.

It was a very busy day for The Merlot boys on Saturday 28 April.

The morning saw Jon dashing to Ilford to visit our latest sponsors Dandycars.com. Its great to have the support of someone else so enthusiastic about Project Merlot.

Martin's morning got of to a hectic start (selling a Fiat!) followed by a dash to EMG Cambridge with Jon to meet up with Robbie and pick up the Merlot for the start of the weekends work.

How can you get lost going to Woolpit? (Well we did!) The plan for the afternoon was to get a head start on The Eastern Region Tech planned for Sunday at which the Merlot was to get its new suspension bushes fitted (donated by Performance 5). The first set of bushes were easy and we began to wonder why another well know Mazda track car team found it so hard! When we got stuck into the second set from a rear lower wishbone we found out how hard it can be! We only broke the one 150mm heavy duty G cramp but the end result of an afternoon work planned to get one side of the car complete saw us get just half of 1 wheel done.

Nevermind, there is always tomorrow and with lots of help from the guys at the Tech day and fortified by lots of sausage rolls we will no doubt succeed (fingers crossed!).

Woodbridge Airfield Track Day 5 May

Project Merlot is heading for its first airfield track day on 5 May 07. Once again the car will be driven by members of the MX-5 Owners Club Eastern Region with another 2 new drivers this time.

The Woodbridge Airfield is fairly new to the track day scene but the events there so far, organised by Javelin Trackdays, have proved a big success.

The April Update

There’s been No track action for Project Merlot in April but both the team and the car have still been busy. The car, driven by Robbie Marsh, took part in the OC Eastern Region annual pub hunt on 1 April and was quite a sight as it dashed around Suffolk from pub to pub as part of the “MidnightWaterPumpers” team in the company of Steve Hiders competition winning white roadster.

April has also seen some further sponsorship developments. Team Merlot are now pleased to have Performance5, the top UK MX-5 performance specialist, as a main sponsor. http://www.performance5.co.uk/.

This month has also seen a further appearance in the national media with a photo of the car on the track at Donnington Park and a write up in the news section of the May issue of Classic and Sports Car. This is the second time the Merlot has appeared in C & SC having been spotted in a write up on the MX-5 Owners Club 2006 National rally in Lincolnshire where the car made its first public appearance back in September.

The bad news for April was the discovery by Robbie of the terrible state of the brakes after the Snetterton track day in March. Robbie described the front brake pads as having “melted”, with “globules of molten metal” having “scored the discs” and “the rear brake pad material having come completely away from their back plates”. All sounded a bit technical to me, I just used the brakes to slow down a bit before the corners, as you do!

A crowd of more than 20 Eastern Region spectators watched as three new drivers took up the challenge to get behind the wheel of Project Merlot.
The novice track day at Snetterton on Saturday, March 10, showcased just what the club's budget-build racer was designed to be - a unique opportunity for members to have more fun.
Steve Hider, Tony Brown and Ian Ward signed up to be on the driver list, alongside track day veteran Martin Curtis.
The car's other owners Robbie Marsh and Jon Elsey were also on hand to ensure that everyone's adventures in the lightweight Mazda went as smoothly as possible.
There were tense faces and a few quiet moments after the 8.30am safety briefing, then Martin handed over the keys to the three who had never driven on a track before.
First were a couple of siting laps for drivers to familiarise themselves with the two-mile track, first to climb into the snug driver's seat was a nervous Ian. He returned 15 minutes later with a big grin on his face, and reported that he found the chicane quite confusing the first time. He said: "I'd been round as a passenger with Jon before so that helped. To be actually driving was good, very good."
He added: "I think there's a lot more speed left in Project Merlot - I haven't used it all... yet!"
He had contended with all sorts of other cars from Porsches and a Maserati, to Caterhams and a custom-built yellow peril with a highly-tuned bike engine.
As a bright green 2CV raced past the pits, Steve laughed: "I'm just happy there's something like that on the track - it gives me more of a chance!"
After his first laps, his verdict was: "Absolutely brilliant, I loved it. Now I can't wait to buy my own car for the track."
As a paramedic, Tony is trained in advanced driving techniques but he said: "I usually drive defensively so this is certainly different."
Following his first laps watched by his son, Tony admitted: "I was a bit nervous. I realised you feel very small with all these bigger cars around you, so I found that a bit disconcerting. But it was really good, I can't wait to go out again."
After his next drive his smile spread even bigger as he said: "My verdict is fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun!"
Passengers got great value for their £10 Snetterton fee, with many opportunities to ride with the various drivers.
Mandy Huggins first accompanied Steve, and he said: "I could hear she was enjoying it so I decided to go a bit faster! Unfortunately every time we caught up with someone they turned into the pits, so I didn't get to overtake much!"
Mandy said: "For the first lap my foot kept trying to brake, then I told myself 'Just relax Mandy' and then I was so relaxed I was rolling around all over the place!"
Kendra Dixon was sitting alongside Tony when the Merlot suffered it's only spin of the day - a full 360 degrees with the car behind following suit.
"The spin wasn't worrying," she said. "But the Porsche spinning and drifting towards us was quite scary. I was wondering how we were going to explain a Porsche-shaped dent in the Merlot to Martin, Jon and Robbie."
Fortunately, the feared impact never occurred and racy roadster was straight back on the track.
Tony suggested his spin could have been due to a twitchiness caused by Robbie and Jon stiffening the suspension during the lunch break.
Technical guru Robbie, who kept the car running all day, said: "If someone smashes it nobody will be upset - but we will take the mickey out of them forever, from now on."
Robbie who had also adjusted the engine's timing to try and eek a bit more power added: "It's quite relaxing for me to stay in the garage and not drive, I'm really enjoying today"
Ken Ward and Kevin Allen both took the opportunity to drive their own cars on the track again. By the afternoon session 33 cars were participating, close to the circuit's maximum of 38.
"It's really busy out there today," said Ken. "but it's good fun."
Jon said: "Today summed up what the original idea was all about.
"It was great to see Merlot being used as it was always intended and I hope that Ian, Tony and Steve got as much fun out of their day as I know Martin, Rob and I have in the past."
During its time on track Project Merlot notched up 294 miles using £90 worth of petrol - that's roughly 14mpg, perhaps we ought to approach Shell for sponsorship!

FIGHTING to keep Project Merlot on the racing line was the primary challenge for Eastern Region members during their second track day.
Patches of ice and standing water still covered the famous Snetterton circuit at 8.30am, so track action was delayed by an hour until the surface was deemed safe.
A crowd of ER supporters lined the pit wall, as the Merlot plus three other club MX-5s made the most of the opportunity to drive unlimited laps - with plenty of thrills and just one spill.
Jon Elsey’s 360-degree spin carved deep into the grass at the first corner. He said: “It was on my second lap in very damp conditions and I watched in my mirror – and through the windscreen! – as the Fiesta behind spun in sympathy at the same time.
“Helpfully, the marshal then waved a flag to warn of the slippery stretch!”
Jon’s only regret was that his video camera had stopped running, and missed capturing the moment.
Eastern Region coordinator Martin Curtis, and Robbie Marsh were also to take their turn at the wheel of Project Merlot.
Motorsport nut Ken Ward dared to drive his own MX-5, as did Norfolk’s Kevin Allen with his new racing wheels and tyres on his local track.
Everyone listened to a safety briefing, along with the drivers of the 34 other cars which covered a huge range from a professionally-built racing Renault Clio to an ex-police Vauxhall Omega, with a handful of Lotus Elises thrown in for good measure.
As the track day was a novice event, a few words of tuition were given before drivers were allowed to get behind the wheel. Cones and signs were placed around the track, showing where to brake and turn for each corner. These aids helped the drivers gradually gain in confidence, as they negotiated Snetterton’s two chicanes, sweeping corners and long fast straights.
As the track dried out and the surface conditions changed, Robbie adjusted the softness of the suspension. Jon said: “At one point, the car was suffering from a nasty twitch when braking hard at the end of the long fast straights, and Robbie’s adjustments brought back stability.”
Martin’s driving went well despite the fact he was having a bad day – Mrs Sharon Curtis could have driven as Martin brought her license by mistake, and officials wouldn’t believe his cross dressing fetish!
After a quick call to the DVLA to confirm his identity, he was allowed on to the track. He later missed not one, not two but three waved red flags ordering a return to the pit lane because of an incident.
The evidence is on tape Martin! This followed him getting a black flag at Donington Park last year on Merlot’s first outing.
When he eventually pulled in after an extra lap, and saw the official striding towards him, Martin said: “You’re going to tell me off, aren’t you?”
Many other ER members enjoyed the thrill of the day and took the chance to participate. Passengers Ady Neill, Steve Alleyne, Jamie Tink, Ian Ward, Kendra Dixon and Tracey Sparling put their lives in the drivers’ hands, and climbed in to the game little car to see what it was capable of. Any members who wanted to experience Project Merlot on our region’s local track, could obtain a passenger wristband and jump in.
Katie Pyle was a passenger in speed demon Ken’s car, and Kendra even talked officials in to giving her a fast ride in the safety car.
The three Merlot drivers clocked up 190 miles in total. There was no stopping them - until Robbie’s fear for the petrol tank running dry, got the better of him. He had to drive the car home, via a refuelling stop, after all!
Jon said: “This time the car behaved impeccably, unlike me! And stood up to all we threw at it.”
Just to add to Martin’s trying day, when the time to leave came, he discovered his car battery was flat. Even this setback failed to dampen members’ spirits as everyone gave him a push start.
Martin said: “Today has been a real success. It’s what we set out to achieve from the outset with everyone getting a chance to take part. We think novice events like this give scope to run up to four drivers in future. If you want to drive next time, come and see me – and form an orderly queue!”

Project Merlot has now been weighed! Having spent so much effort removing bits it was time to find out what we had achieved so the car has now been corner weighed. And the results;

251.5 (LHF) 269.5 (RHF) 232 (LHR) 236.5 (RHR) totalling 989.5 kg..

This makes Project Merlot about 10% lighter than when we started, about the same weight as a MaX5 race car. So 10% lighter, 10% quicker, just maybe…

A legend is born!

The invitation was innocent enough.
An e-mail had arrived out of the blue, asking ‘Does anybody know someone who would be interested in buying a dead MX-5 Merlot with a blown engine?’
When the message was received at Eastern Region headquarters in August 2006, technical guru Robbie Marsh was put straight on the case.
“Oh dear me,” was his first reaction as he spotted the car, in the yard of a Cambridgeshire garage.
The bodywork was poor, with several large dents and numerous deep scrapes, not to mention the rust and corroded alloys.
The interior was a very sad sight, with peeling wood trim and a general air of neglect.
On further investigation Robbie discovered the Merlot had been driven until its motor had seized. The radiator was completely blocked and the engine had simply cooked itself.
Area coordinator Martin Curtis said: “No doubt the previous owner had loved the car but it looked like it was now the end of their relationship. “Robbie’s expert opinion on this sad wreck was that restoration was simply uneconomical.
“So we had a dilemma. Did we allow the poor car to go to scrap, or could we somehow turn this into something worthwhile, with a little imagination and a lot of hard graft?
“Three options were considered; purchase the car and break it for spares, restore the car to its former glory and sell it on, or the even more off-the-wall suggestion to get it running again and strip it out for use as a road-legal racer to promote the club.”
As is often the case, where an opportunity exists, it gets discussed down the pub. The pros and cons of each option were debated over a pint or two.

Martin, Robbie and fellow member Jon Elsey seized the moment. They had soon agreed a price to buy the car, pay off the previous owner’s garage bill and get it delivered for a thorough inspection.
Meanwhile graphic designer Jon had been giving the subject much thought, and when he was feeling particularly inspired one rainy afternoon, produced a Photoshop image of a Merlot track car complete with Eastern Region graphics.
Martin said: “That was it, we needed no more discussion. The image looked so cool we just had to go for the third option, to strip it out and make it available for anybody from our area, to try on a track. But we also wanted to make the project pay for itself.”
The Owners’ Club National Rally was less than three weeks away, and because every plan works better with a tight deadline, they decided to unveil Project Merlot at the Lincolnshire event.
So several hundred man hours later, after much fluid had been spilt on Robbie’s drive (some of it oil, most of it sweat!), the car boasted a replacement engine and radiator, refurbished wheels, and restored interior.
Dents had been knocked out (sort of!), and bare metal crudely painted.
Other club members then stepped in to help. Gary Kearley gave the car a professional polish, and sign writer Ady Neill made and applied the eye-catching graphics which Jon designed. Project Merlot was once again roadworthy and fit to be seen in public!
At the rally, members stripped the car with the aim of selling any parts that were deemed not essential. The grey leather seats had already been sold through an MX-5 online forum.
Martin said: "We wanted to recoup some of the costs, and get people interested in the project. Crowds flocked round the car to see what all the fuss was about.
”We were extremely busy, with people buying or part exchanging bits and pieces all day. We nearly broke even that day, but we've spent more on the car since then!"
A week later the tax, temporary insurance and MoT all ran out simultaneously. With mounting trepidation, the trio booked Project Merlot in for its MoT.
Amazingly, it flew through the checks, with just one advisory - that the passenger seat was missing! Then they taxed and insured the car, and fitted it with two racing seats.
At the Eastern Region Tech Day in October, many other members became involved with the project. Engineer Ken Ward fitted a four-point roll bar, assisted by Ian Ward, Jamie Day and expert welder Steve Alleyne.
It proved to be a test of ingenuity as they used angle grinders and hacksaws to carve in to yet more of the interior.
Although the car was initially bought by three enthusiasts, a real team effort has developed to get it ready for the track.
Some members have donated parts either to equip the Merlot, or to sell to raise funds.
Jon said: "We are already having fun building the car, and maintaining it on such a limited budget. We’re all learning as we go along.”
Members are now looking forward to the day when they can get behind the wheel.
Gary drove it up and down the road at the rally, and said: “I nearly demolished the club's display by accident! I’d like to go on the track with it, especially now it looks so cool with the roll bar and race seats. It's a great opportunity, and it's something I'd never do with my own car."
Steve would also love to drive the track car, and he said: “It's a great idea. I think I would have to join a very long queue to drive it - but they probably wouldn’t let me in it anyway!"
As preparations continued, Jon said: “This is now about more than putting a car on a track. Project Merlot has brought a lot of people together, and thrown down challenges - which so far we have managed to solve.
“We knew Robbie was a Roadster expert, but we didn’t know about Ken’s brilliant engineering skills, and we didn’t know that Steve was such a good welder. So it’s brought a lot of people out of themselves, and revealed their talents. And we haven’t even got near a track yet.
“Just like any great racing team, the pit crew are just as important as the nut behind the wheel!”
Martin agreed: "Between all the members we have quite a lot of expertise in all sorts of areas, and I think most clubs would be the same.”
Hence another idea is born - today the Eastern Region is issuing an invitation to other areas of the MX-5 Owners’ Club. It plans to host an inter-club challenge which will be the first of its kind.

WITH his heart racing, Jon Elsey gripped the wheel and steered ‘Project Merlot’ on to the circuit for the first time.
It was the moment he and fellow Eastern Region mates had been working towards for weeks - but within minutes the car’s debut at Donington Park became spectacular for all the wrong reasons.
Martin Curtis, Robbie Marsh and Jon had spent hundreds of hours renovating the ten-year-old MX-5.
They had transformed it from a rusty wreck to a race car, in just eight weeks.
Jon was on his third lap rounding Redgate Corner, when a cloud of white smoke engulfed the car.
“My first thought was that the engine had blown up,” he said.
“Robbie was in the passenger seat, and he was saying ‘it’s not smoke, I can smell antifreeze.’ He told me to keep an eye on the temperature gauge and drive slowly back to the pits.”
Martin who was watching from the pit lane, said: “My heart sank. I was about to pack everything away and go home.”
Technical guru Robbie said: “I thought the radiator or head gasket had gone, which would have been terminal enough to leave us no option but to donate it to the Donington Museum.”
But in the pits he lifted the bonnet, to discover a hose had split. He said: “I knew instantly it was the heater hose,” and he was able to fix it.
“I had a box of car bits which we’d been planning to sell off, and in it there was an old pipe which I cut in half with a borrowed hacksaw. I nearly hadn’t brought the box of spares or any tools as I couldn’t be bothered to fill the car with only to remove it all at the track, but it was a good job I did.”
20-nailbiting-minutes later, the car was ready for the remainder of the day’s sessions - which were more about the love of driving, than competing to win.
There were seven 20-minute sessions during the day, so Jon, Martin and Robbie drove for two each, and as the day progressed, their lap times improved.
They shared the final session between them, darting in to the pits for Le Mans-style driver changes.
Jon said: “We went from the fattest to the thinnest, because it was so time-consuming to adjust the seat belt every time!”
When the sun set, the trio headed home to East Anglia.
Robbie said afterwards: “It felt very planted, and the harness really makes you feel in touch with the track.”
“I don’t think Project Merlot was that fast, in fact we were lapping some 15-20 seconds slower than cars like Cosworths and Caterhams, so we’ve got some development work ahead. But if we’d been against a group of other MX-5s, it would have felt faster. We got it to the track and that was the main goal.”
Martin said: “We’d all been a bit quiet and nervous the night before. The day was nerve-racking, but exciting and quite a scary experience,” .”said Martin.
But he added: “I can’t wait to do it again. I just think it’s a fantastic achievement from what we started with, within a very short space of time, and with minimal cost – just lots of hard work and teamwork.”
They paid just £50 for the car, plus £150 to pay off the previous owner’s garage bill and get it delivered.
But more money has been spent since, on rebuilding the car for track days. The idea was always to make the project pay for itself, and Martin keeps detailed accounts. So far the project has cost them around £150 each, including insurance and road tax.
Jon said: “It shows you don’t have to spend thousands of pounds to have a go at being a racing driver. It was my childhood dream, and now for a very small outlay that dream is coming true, and it will for other people who drive it too.”
The Donington drive came after ER an Eastern Region Tech Day, a report of which featured in the last issue of STHT. Then came a fortnight of hard work for the trio and fellow member Ken Ward, who offered his skills as a precision engineer.
Ken, who runs Godfreys Precision Engineers at Beccles in Suffolk, crafted a metal bar to fit the racing harness to.
He even engraved the words ‘Merlot Motorsport’ on it, and designed and made a clever mount for a video camera.
Robbie said: “Ken had the most amazing machines at his workshop! It took us from 9am to 3pm to fit the bar, because it was made to such a high standard, and our car didn’t appear to be engineered as accurately as that!”
Jon bought an extra set of wheels through e-bay, which cost the princely sum of £56. He said: “They had the most intriguing description which would have put most buyers off. The seller was saying ‘you don’t want to buy these because they are so bad’ – so we did!
“When I used paint stripper to clean them up, I nearly poisoned myself with fumes. The lacquer had lifted and started to corrode, so I rubbed them down and resprayed them. The real revelation was not only that the wheels were in great condition under the paint, but the tyres were also very very good. They are on the car now.”
E-bay also proved a useful tool to find the Sparco pro racing harness, and they had already bought both racing seats off the website, and opened an account to sell off surplus parts.
Robbie also fitted second-hand performance springs and shock absorbers, and re-aligned the wheels.
He said: “We fitted the springs because we thought the car needed to sit lower, it just looked wrong as it was. We all know that lowering an MX-5 is one of the best single modifications you can do. It’s the only performance modification we have made to the car, and plan to make for the time being.”
Martin agreed: “We want to keep true to the spirit of the car.”
In the lead-up to Donington, Robbie was a lecturer at Huntingdonshire Regional College, where students on the motorsport course were keen to help with Project Merlot.
Two pupils even pledged to buy their own MX-5s in future. They helped weigh the car, and discovered that stripping parts had lightened it by ten per cent. It now weighs 975kg, with many parts still to come off.
Jon, Martin and Robbie then added the final touches to get the car ready for the track, like bonnet clips (which came straight from ‘the chav section at Halfords’), a detachable number plate, and a fire extinguisher - at Jon’s insistence.
Jon said: “I wanted the fire extinguisher, and had that steam coming out of the car at Donington been smoke, it could have come in to its own!”
After being black-flagged at Donington when the car was out-classed by speedier drivers, Martin said: “We realised there’s probably a lot more to this racing driver thing than we’d thought!
“We need a lot more practice. We now plan to book more track days, to allow other members to be able to drive too, and we’ll make sure we are in the right group next time.”

Tech Day Triumph

A LAST minute disaster brought out the best in Eastern Region members at their latest Tech Day. It should have been a triumphant hour, when everybody could sit back and enjoy a mug of tea before heading home. Modifications had been made to the club’s new car – dubbed Project Merlot - including the addition of a new four-point roll bar to prepare it for track days.But as members went to replace the driver’s racing seat, things all went horribly wrong. The team had spent the day adapting the interior with an angle grinder to take the roll bar, which was expertly bolted it in to place. But then they discovered the seat wouldn't fit back in. There was a dumfounded silence, as hearts sank in unison.A crowd of glum faces gathered round to ponder the problem. Mazda expert Robbie Marsh, the man who had to drive the Merlot home, was suffering a rollercoaster of emotions.“I love this car,” he’d been saying.When disaster struck, the weeks of hard work flashed before his eyes and he was heard to say “Oh scrap it, I hate it and I want to scrap it.” Then he declared “Let’s just go and leave it here!”It took Ken Ward, Steve Alleyne and Ian Ward to work out a solution. They decided where to cut the metal, to realign the bar. Then in the blink of an eye, the task transformed from a feat of precision engineering, to a scene worthy of Scrapheap Challenge.Two pieces of 2x1 timber and a roll of gaffer tape, combined with a burst of ingenuity, were needed as the team built templates to find the answer.Then it was Steve and his Mig welder to the rescue, to cut-and-shut the cage’s support bars, to safely make them fit. RESULT !!! Nice one guys....
